Alice Stewart, a respected CNN political commentator and advisor to several GOP presidential campaigns, passed away on Saturday at the age of 58. She was discovered outdoors in the Bellevue neighborhood of northern Virginia, where law enforcement officials reported she likely suffered a medical emergency. No foul play is suspected.
“Alice was a very dear friend and colleague to all of us at CNN,” said Mark Thompson, CEO of CNN, in an email to staff. “She was a political veteran and an Emmy Award-winning journalist who brought an incomparable spark to CNN’s coverage. She was known across our bureaus not only for her political savvy but for her unwavering kindness. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn such an extraordinary loss.”
Stewart’s sudden passing has left many questions unanswered, particularly regarding any underlying health issues she may have had. She appeared on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” just one day before her death. Her last Instagram post reflected her upbeat nature: “It’s always a sunny day when you can join the great @wolfblitzer on #CNN with @mariacardonadc!”
Alice Stewart, originally from Georgia, joined CNN ahead of the 2016 election and quickly became a fixture at the network. Her career began as a local reporter and producer in Georgia and as a news anchor in Little Rock, Arkansas. She transitioned to the political realm by serving as communications director for then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. She continued in this role for his 2008 presidential campaign, and later for Michele Bachmann’s 2012 presidential bid, Rick Santorum’s 2012 campaign, and Ted Cruz’s 2016 campaign.
Stewart’s colleagues expressed their grief and admiration for her on social media. “My heart is broken over the passing of our dear colleague Alice Stewart. We’ve been friends going back to the 2012 campaign,” wrote CNN Newsroom anchor Jim Acosta, referencing his own work on Sen. Mitt Romney’s campaign.
As of now, details about Stewart’s personal life, including whether she had children or a husband, remain private. Her legacy in political journalism and her contributions to GOP campaigns will be remembered by many in the field.
